Updating a Tax
Change a tax when the rate or label needs to update. Items that use the tax keep pointing at the same tax row, and pick up the new rate on new orders after you save.
Before you start
- The Taxes · Modify permission.
Steps

Go to Taxes
Open the sidebar menu and go to Configurations. Under Payments & Tax, select Taxes.

Choose a tax
Tap Edit on the tax you want to change, or tap its name.

Edit the details
Update Name, Description, Rate Type, and Rate.

Save
Tap Save. New orders pick up the updated rate.

What happens next
- The tax list is refreshed. Every item with this tax uses the new rate on its next sale. Other devices are told only on plans with live sync.
Edge cases
- History is safe. Completed orders keep the tax recorded at sale time. Updating a rate never rewrites history.
- The register can lag. The register's item list carries each item's tax, and it is not refreshed when you change a tax. For up to 5 minutes the register can keep the old rate while new orders are saved with the new one.
- Same rate checks as creating: 0 or more, and a percentage at most 100.
- Locked Tax. On Basic, or after a downgrade, you cannot manage rates until you upgrade. Stored rates are kept.
- The Tax preference. Tax is worked out only while your plan has Taxes and the store's Charge tax preference is on (Preferences → Store, on by default). With either off, new orders have no tax at all, saved orders keep what they recorded, and the taxes stay in place for later. This is how you stop charging tax for a while: there is no switch to turn a single tax off.
