Creating a Tax

Create a tax rate once, then attach it to catalog items. Rates you create here appear in the product Tax picker and on the register.

Before you start

• A plan with Taxes (Starter or up).
• The Taxes · Modify permission.

Steps

What happens next

• The tax list is refreshed. Other devices are told only on plans with live sync.
• A tax does nothing until it is attached to an item. See Attaching Tax to an Item.

Edge cases

• Rate checks. The rate must be 0 or more, and a percentage at most 100. A fixed rate is an amount in your store currency with no such cap.
• Prices are tax-inclusive for both rate types: the tax is extracted from the price, not added on top.
• Names need not be unique, so pick clear names staff recognize on receipts and reports.
• Template taxes from store setup sit in the same list, and you can edit them here when Tax is unlocked.
• Without Taxes on your plan, the Taxes screen hides and the server refuses the save.
• The Tax preference. Tax is worked out only while your plan has Taxes and the store's Charge tax preference is on (Preferences → Store, on by default). With either off, new orders have no tax at all, saved orders keep what they recorded, and the taxes stay in place for later. This is how you stop charging tax for a while: there is no switch to turn a single tax off.
