Scanning QR Codes and Barcodes

Applies toEvery plan, including free BasicNeeds Point of Sale · ModifyUsually owner, manager, cashier

One scanner reads every kind of code and sends each to the right place. Camera scanning is off until you turn it on for the device.

Before you start

  • The Point of Sale · Modify permission.
  • A phone, tablet or computer with a camera, or a hardware scanner.

Steps

1

Turn the scanner on

Open Account → Settings → Point of Sale on the device. Turn on Camera barcode scanner. Turn on Hardware barcode scanner for a USB or Bluetooth scanner that types like a keyboard, which helps most on the web register.

Tap Scan

Tap Scan in the POS menu or on the register. The camera opens over the current screen. Close it with X to return to the same place, with an unsaved cart kept.

Point at the code

A receipt or pickup code opens the order. A product barcode adds the product to the register cart, with the options sheet if it needs a choice. A table code opens the register on that table. A waiting-list ticket or booking code opens its entry.

If there is nothing to point at

Tap Upload image to read a code from a customer's screenshot, or Paste link after copying the link from their message. Both behave exactly like a scan.

What happens next

  • The code goes where it belongs: the order, the product line, the booking, the waiting-list entry or the table.

Edge cases

  • Codes it understands. Receipt and pickup codes, product barcodes, waiting-list tickets, bookings, table codes, a customer's own order code from the store page, staff badges and customer cards.
  • Customer order codes load the customer's items. An expired code is refused. Items no longer in the catalog are skipped with a note, and switched-off or sold-out items warn you before you charge.
  • Bookings open only on a plan with events, and a waiting-list ticket only with the Waiting List add-on. Basic stores still scan products and order codes.
  • Another store's code is refused with a note to switch stores. A code you may not use is refused with a no-permission note.
  • Not found. A random QR or unknown barcode shows a brief not-found note, the scanner stays open and nothing is added.
  • Sold-out products are refused with a note to mark them available first.
  • NFC cards and tags. With the NFC add-on every POS screen has a card button. Tap it and hold a customer card or staff badge to the phone. On Android you can hold the card while a POS screen is open. See Customer Cards.
  • A customer's own phone camera opens a public live status page when the store keeps public status on. Staff scanning the same code in Fuze open the full order.
  • Email and text codes. Notification emails can carry a scannable code. Sending them needs email notifications (Starter and up) or the SMS add-on with Wallet points.
  • Hub pairing codes are not handled here. Use the Hub setup wizard.
