How to Add a Category
Categories help you organize products and services so staff and customers find what they need. You might create "Drinks", "Snacks", or "Packages", whatever fits your business.
Before you start
- The Categories · Modify permission.
Steps
Go to Categories
Open the sidebar menu and choose Categories (under Catalog).
Press New Category
Press New Category at the top right of the list. It shows only to people who may change categories.
Fill in the General tab
Set Enable (on by default). In Show on, choose Register tab, Online store, both (the default), or neither. Enter a Name and, optionally, a Code, a Parent Category, a Description, a Color, and an Image. Make each name unique and easy to read, and use codes with no spaces, such as "hot-drinks".
Attach items (optional)
Open the Products tab and press Attach products/services. Search by name or SKU, tap each item you want in the category, then press Done. Detach removes one again. Nothing is linked until you save.
Save
Press Save. The category appears in the POS and menus.
What happens next
- The register and the public menu are refreshed: the cached category list, the register's categories and items, and the store's public menu. Other devices are told only on plans with live sync.
- A category becomes a tab on the register only when it is on and Register tab is on.
Edge cases
- Online store off. Items that are only in this category are hidden online. An item that is also in a shown category stays visible there.
- Both Show on switches off is allowed. The category then does not tab on the register or list online.
- Rules checked on save. A name is required. A code may use only lowercase letters, numbers, dashes, and underscores. A color must be a hex code. A picture must be an image up to 2 MB. A parent that no longer exists is refused.
- Attaching items needs read access to the catalog. Without permission to view, change, or delete products, the request that carries the item list is refused. An item from another store is dropped.
- Nested categories. Pick a parent to make a sub-category. All categories load, up to 2,000, so a large store keeps every path.
- Older apps and spreadsheets that send only the old "Include in menu" setting get Online store set to match it.
