# Setting Commission Rates

A rate can live at three levels. When a sale is recorded, each staff member's rate is worked out on its own: an item override, then their own rate, then the store default for that kind of item.

## Before you start

- Staff commissions is on.
- The **Commissions · Manage** permission to set staff rates.

## Steps

In **Preferences → Store → Staff commissions**, set one default for services and one for products, as a **percent** or a **flat amount** per unit.

On the staff member's profile, set **Default commission rate**. It beats the store default for every item they work on, unless the item has an override.

On a product or service, set **Commission override**. It applies to every staff member on that line and always wins.

## Edge cases

- **Percent or flat.** Percent takes a share of the line's price after discounts and before tax. A flat amount pays a fixed sum per unit, times quantity. Either can be set at any of the three levels. **Amount per line** is available only on a register line.
- **Rates apply going forward.** A sale already recorded keeps the rate it was priced at, even when its order changes later.
- **Example.** Store default 40%: give Marco his own 45% and every service he works pays 45%. If one premium service should pay everyone 50%, set a 50% override on that item instead.
- **A 0% override** on an item means nobody earns on it, on purpose.
- **Why is my number different?** An item override beat their staff rate. They have their own rate, which beats the store default. With no rate typed at the register, each person's resolved rate is split across the crew, so different rates give different amounts.
- **Hidden for some pay types.** Fixed only and Other staff have no Default commission rate. See [Staff Pay Structure](/docs/store/staff-operations/staff-pay-structure).
- **Organization people** use the rate on their pay profile on the day of the sale. See [Pay Profiles](/docs/account/organizations/organization-pay-profiles).
