# Pairing Terminals

A terminal is a registered device, such as an iPad or a web register. Pairing a device makes it a terminal, so the orders it takes are attributed to whoever is signed in on it. Each store can have many terminals.

## How pairing works

Pairing uses a short code, the same pattern as plugging in a new card reader. A manager generates the code, then anyone signed in on the new device enters it to register that device.

The code is the authorization. No extra permission is needed to claim it -- holding the code is enough.

Open the **Terminal** hub and choose to add a terminal. Enter the name you want the new device to have, then generate an 8-character pairing code. The code is shown once and is valid for about 15 minutes.

On the device you want to register, make sure someone is signed in, open the terminal screen, and enter the pairing code. The device registers under the name you set.

Back in the terminal registry, the new device appears with an online status. Online or offline reflects recent activity.

## Managing terminals

From the terminal registry you can:

- **Rename** a terminal so it's easy to tell devices apart.
- **Revoke** a terminal. Revoking unbinds the device. It must be re-registered before it can take orders again.

## Require a registered terminal

You can turn on a store setting that blocks taking orders on an unregistered device. When it's on, a device must be paired before it can ring up a sale. See [Activity log and settings](/docs/store/staff-operations/activity-and-settings) for how to enable it.

A terminal's registration is bound to its Device ID, found under Settings then Device. Reinstalling the app or regenerating the Device ID breaks the binding, and you will need to pair the device again.
