# Staff Operations Overview

Staff Operations turns the basic staff PIN into a complete shift platform. It gives your shared registers PIN sign-in, per-operator sessions, manager approvals, an activity audit log, terminal registration, and terminal auto-lock. It is built for shops where several cashiers share the same register across shifts.

## Who it's for

Staff Operations is most useful when:

- Multiple cashiers take turns on the same iPad or web register.
- You run shifts and want each sale tied to whoever was signed in.
- You want managers to approve sensitive actions without taking over the till.
- You need a clear record of who did what, for accountability and loss prevention.

If a single owner runs a single device, you may not need it. The add-on shines on shared hardware.

## What's included

Each piece has its own guide:

- **[Staff PINs](/docs/store/staff-operations/pin-credentials)** -- the numeric code each person uses to sign in and to approve actions.
- **[Pairing terminals](/docs/store/staff-operations/pairing-terminals)** -- register your shared devices so orders are attributed to the active operator.
- **[Switching staff](/docs/store/staff-operations/switching-staff)** -- open and hand over shift sessions at a shared register.
- **[Manager approvals](/docs/store/staff-operations/manager-approvals)** -- have a manager approve gated actions in place by PIN.
- **[Activity log and settings](/docs/store/staff-operations/activity-and-settings)** -- review the audit trail and configure the rules.

## Before you start

Staff Operations is a paid per-store add-on. You can use it on any paid plan with the add-on enabled, and it is included free during a free trial.

For cashier-versus-manager access to actually differ, the **Roles & Permissions** add-on should be active. Without it, every staff member gets full access and approvals lose their meaning.

Staff Operations is separate from, but complements, your Staff & Roles setup. You still add team members and assign roles the normal way. Staff Operations adds the shift, terminal, and approval layer on top.
