# Activity Log and Settings

Staff Operations keeps a record of every gated action and gives you settings to tune how strict the shift rules are. Managers use the log for accountability and loss prevention, and the settings to match the way your store runs.

## Activity log

Every gated action is written to an append-only audit log. That includes:

- Sign-ins and staff switches.
- Handovers.
- Voids.
- Approvals.
- Terminal changes.

You can filter the log by type, staff member, and date. Because it is append-only, entries cannot be edited or deleted, so it stays a trustworthy record.

## Settings

You configure Staff Operations under **Preferences** then **Store** then **Staff Operations**.

### Require registered terminal

Blocks taking orders on a device until it has been paired as a terminal. Turn this on when you want every sale to come from a known device. See [Pairing terminals](/docs/store/staff-operations/pairing-terminals).

### Terminal auto lock

Locks a registered terminal for PIN re-entry after it has been left idle in the background for the duration you set, in seconds. This only affects registered terminals, so a personal device that was never paired is never auto-locked.

### Require open session for POS

Found under the session settings, this requires a cashier to start a cash session before they can take orders. Use it when you reconcile the till every shift.

### Approval policies

You choose which actions need approval and the thresholds that trigger them. This is what makes a manager's PIN required for voids, refunds, or large stock adjustments. See [Manager approvals](/docs/store/staff-operations/manager-approvals).

You can enable Staff Operations and leave most gates off, then turn on require-terminal, auto-lock, and approval thresholds as your team grows comfortable with the flow.
