# Tags and Badges Overview

The **NFC** add-on lets your store write small tags that phones and the register read with a tap. Each kind of tag does one job.

## What this covers

**The tags.**

| Tag | What a tap does | Guide |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Business card** | Opens your store page with a Save contact button | [Your Store's Business Card](/docs/store/nfc/business-card) |
| **Table tag** | Lets a guest follow their own order | [Table Tags and Order Codes](/docs/store/nfc/table-tags) |
| **Staff badge** | Signs a staff member in, unlocks a terminal or approves an action instead of a PIN | [Staff Badges](/docs/store/nfc/staff-badges) |
| **Customer card** | Finds that customer at the register in one tap | [Customer Cards](/docs/store/nfc/customer-cards) |
| **Product tag** | Adds that product to the order at the register | [Product Tags](/docs/store/nfc/product-tags) |
| **Claim tag** | Finds a drop-off order at pickup. Each tag comes back before the order is collected, by a tap or, if the store allows it, marked back | [Claim Tags](/docs/store/nfc/claim-tags) |

**Write, read and erase.** Open **Configurations → NFC**. **Write tag** writes a store link, business card, menu, product, table, staff badge, customer card or plain text, and shows what will be written first. **Read tag** shows what a tag holds, what it points to and whether it is protected, and **Open** goes where a scan would. **Erase tag** wipes a tag in the same hold and takes your store's lock off, so the blank tag can be used anywhere, including another store.

**Holding a tag.** Hold it to the back of the phone, or on the counter reader, and keep it there. The app says **Hold the tag near your phone**, then **Keep holding**, then **Done**. On an iPhone this shows in the iPhone's own NFC sheet. On Android and the web it shows in a panel.

**Tapping tags at the register.** The register has an **NFC** button beside the barcode scanner. A product tag adds the product, a table tag sets the table, and a customer card adds the customer. Other POS screens have a **card** button, and the side menu has **Scan card**.

**Protecting tags.** With **Protect tags** on, every tag you write is locked with a password only the server knows. A tag another store protected is left alone: the app says **Locked by another store** and changes nothing. To free it, the store that locked it erases it in Fuze Store.

## Works with

| Add-on or plan | What changes |
| --- | --- |
| NFC add-on | Needed to write, read and erase NFC tags. Reading a customer-facing tag works on any modern phone. Free during the free trial. |
| Protect tags preference | On by default under Preferences → Printing & Devices → NFC. Tags you write are locked so only your store can change them. Turning it off does not unprotect tags already written. |
| Staff Operations add-on | Needed for staff badges. |
| Plan | Tables and units need Starter and up. |

## Edge cases

- **Needs the right permission.** Writing and erasing need **NFC · Modify**. Reading needs View or Modify. Without it the page shows a notice.
- **Needs a reader.** A phone or tablet with NFC turned on, or on the web a Hub with an NFC reader. The page shows **Ready**, **NFC is off**, **Not supported** or **No reader**.
- **Erasing a tag** keeps it formatted and a protected tag stays protected. It refuses a staff badge or customer card still in use until you confirm, and does not revoke the badge or card. Revoke those on the profile.
- **A revoked badge or card** is erased from its own profile with **Erase card**. Only that card is erased, and any other tag is refused with nothing changed, including the same card after it was written again in one of your other stores.
- **Reading never tries a tag's password,** so reading another store's protected tag does it no harm.
- **A blank tag** reads as having no readable content.
